Because the body is such a wonderful instrument, it can cope with a great deal of punishment and still function. But the day will finally come when our indulgence and poor quality foods will cause us trouble – real trouble, pain, suffering, misery and agony!
These words were spoken to me by a prominent Health Practitioner at a time when I sought solutions to a painful case of osteoarthritis.

I already knew that drinking distilled water in preference to anything that came out of the tap, or from fancy spring or spa bottled waters, was highly recommended and the choice of millions for very good reasons.
However, I had also heard that some doctors were a little anxious about the lack of trace elements in distilled water, being so pure, that some people might not benefit as much as they should unless their diet compensated, so I asked him.

I had been given plenty to think about. This got me to delve further into the mysteries of water and our body’s needs to remain healthy. I found, for example, that for optimum health our body must maintain an alkaline condition, and that by far the majority of people have an acid condition instead. This is largely caused by life styles with either lack of – or excessive – exercise, high stress levels, high meat and fat intake, too much of high calorie foods, cigarettes and alcohol, and daily exposure to pollution from air, water, chemicals and gases. These conditions produce a high level of acidity within our bodies that can reduce our body’s ability to keep the right balance for good health and long life, and if not compensated for can lead to a multitude of ailments.

But how does the body become acid?
When we breathe in air, our lungs extract oxygen which the blood then carry to the cells where it is exchanged for carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide is then carried back to the lungs and exhaled and to a lesser degree released via the skin.
Here is the problem.
Carbon dioxide is a toxic gas; in fact it is so toxic to the brain that it is routinely used worldwide to euthanase laboratory animals. It is produced in quite high concentrations of up to 1kg/day for an average person inside the body cells – during the metabolising of digested food.
Carbon dioxide in the cells will react with some of the cell water to form acid; indeed most of the acid in the body originates in this way. Now I understand how organs can become poisoned and diseased.
Diseases that utilize carbon dioxide concentrations as the destructive step in the development of the disease include osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, autoimmune diseases [such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis] as well as many skin diseases and cancers.
Ah! You say, but doesn’t the exchange of oxygen with carbon dioxide take care of this? Well, no, the life of the cell is dependent on the exchange taking place almost as the carbon dioxide reaction takes place, but delays are always present and any increase in the oxygen supply to compensate, as well as increases in the renal response [kidney function] to removal of the excess acid, always lack behind.
Worse, even relatively small increases in acidity are detrimental and can affect many of our body’s function from nerves to enzyme production. Hence lowered energy and inability to maintain normal functions resulting in slow degeneration and ageing.
Did you know that the air we breathe today, apart from being polluted, contains only 18% oxygen compared with 22% some 50 years ago? That is less oxygen for the oxygenation of the blood to carry to the cells, so we have an urgent need to decrease the carbon dioxide production and increase oxygen to the cells.
